What is ADD/ADHD?

It is characterized by difficulty paying attention and excess motor activity. Despite ADD being the most commonly studied mental disorder in children, it is not well understood. In certain cases, it is mostly caused by unhealthy modern lifestyle: too much sugar, wheat and artificial food additives plus excess screen time and not enough exercise or parental attention. In other cases, a vitamin (e.g., B12 or folate) or omega-3 fatty acid insufficiency can contribute to poor concentration

Fish Oil

The human brain is nearly 60% fat and fatty acids are the essential “building blocks” that determine your brain’s integrity and ability to perform.1 For those who don’t regularly eat omega-3 fatty acid-rich foods like wild seafood or grass-fed beef, taking a fish oil supplement may improve cognition. Choose a fish oil that contains generous amounts of DHA and EPA per serving and that is "molecularly distilled" to ensure it has does not contain any toxins or impurities. A 2013 review of published studies found that supplementing omega-3 fatty acids produced small yet significant reductions in ADHD symptoms and removing artificial food colorings from the diet had even better improvements.

Lion's Mane

This edible ‘smart mushroom’ is fast becoming one of the hottest brain health supplements on the market. Lion’s mane has long been used in Japanese and Chinese traditional medicine and it contains active compounds called hericerins, erinacines and erinalactones. Experiments on adult mice have found that lion’s mane reduces anxiety and depressive behaviors by promoting the growth of new brain cells in the hippocampus. These claims are supported by human trials suggesting that lion's mane may improve cognitive function in older adults and improve concentration, depression & anxiety in menopausal women. For the strongest brain healing & enhancing effects, looks for products made from lion’s mane mycelium.

Lecithin (Choline)

Lecithin is a fat that is essential to cells of the body. Lecithin contains high levels of choline, a neurotransmitter precursor that helps build the protective myelin sheath around neurons of brain and nerve cells. In two studies with a total of 3,400 people, choline improved cognitive performance. A 2015 analysis of 50 published studies found that "choline may have beneficial effects on cognition" but noted that higher-quality studies need to be done.

To increase choline you can eat more choline-rich foods like egg yolks and liver or else take supplements. Most lecithin powder on the market is made from soybeans. Those who are sensitive to soy or concerned about the presence of estrogen-like compounds may opt for sunflower lecithin. A potent metabolite of choline called citicoline (Cognizin™) is also available as a supplement.
